This article summarises the results of an empirical investigation on the potential for economic growth, renewable energy use, technical advancement, and forest cover in Indonesia to reduce CO2 emissions using DOLS approach to analyze the time series data covering 1990-2020.

Indonesia, as the largest economy in Southeast Asia with a population exceeding 270 million, faces a doubling of energy demand by 2050, primarily driven by economic growth but currently relies heavily on fossil fuels, especially coal. However, the imperative to address environmental concerns, avoid resource depletion, and adapt to global energy transition trends underscores the need for a shift to renewable energy sources to achieve a sustainable net-zero future.

This study focuses on green house gases reduction from the use of rooftop solar energy in Thai industries.

This study examines Indonesia's power generation plans, aiming for 23%, 28%, and 31% renewable energy by 2025, 2038, and 2050. Four scenarios are analyzed: BAU, CO (cost optimization), NP (national plan), and ZC (zero-carbon). The BAU scenario, based on PLN's 2019-2028 plan, lacks renewable targets and has the highest total power production cost of $180.51 billion by 2050. The CO scenario, with the lowest cost of $89.21 billion, aims to meet renewables mandates efficiently but may face practical challenges.

At the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in November 2021, Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh unexpectedly announced the country's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, a challenging endeavor for a rapidly growing economy heavily reliant on coal power in the Mekong sub region, raising questions about how the government plans to make this transition.

The paper examines the 2020 CO2 emissions of ASEAN, comprising 4.75% of global emissions, focusing on the major contributors (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines) and analyzes the 2018 total primary energy consumption and CO2 emission profiles of ASEAN-7, proposing seven pathways for rapid decarbonization, including increased renewable energy, coal-to-gas substitution, electrification, hydrogen use, biofuels, blue hydrogen, and regional carbon capture and storage corridors.

Southeast Asia is a significant stakeholder in the global action against climate change, given its growing population, rising greenhouse gas emissions, and vulnerability to climate change impacts. Public policy makers in this region are faced with the challenge of transitioning to cleaner energy sources to enable the attainment of Paris Agreement goals, while also expanding access to affordable and reliable energy supplies. Southeast Asia has one of world's fastest growing rates of greenhouse gas emissions due to rising fossil fuel combustion, second only to South Asia. As such, it is imperative to decouple its energy consumption from emissions growth. This paper reviews Southeast Asia's energy sector trends, with a focus on electricity supply and demand vis-à-vis global decarbonization efforts. Based on global and regional best practices, the paper highlights the crucial role that governments and public policy can play in accelerating the region's clean energy transition, namely through the establishment of mandatory long-term climate and renewable energy targets and binding policies; use of iterative and adaptive power system planning; support for effective market development; financing of pioneering investments and trunk infrastructure; and support for a just and equitable transition.

The power sector is one of the major contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions while also being vulnerable to climate change in its own right. Accordingly, the global power sector needs to accelerate decarbonization. This paper assesses power sector pathways to net-zero emissions by 2050 for the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) using the Low Emissions Analysis Platform (LEAP). In addition to simulating a net-zero emissions scenario, the paper builds reference and renewable policy scenarios, enabling an analysis of additional measures required beyond the business as usual and current policy trajectories to achieve net-zero emissions. The LEAP simulation results indicate that under the net-zero emissions scenario, ASEAN member states need to swiftly capitalize on their currently underutilized renewable energy potential to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. By then, there will have to be a substantial transformation of the technological portfolio with variable renewable energy and energy storage coming to play central roles. The LEAP simulations also indicate that renewable and energy storage technologies are more cost-competitive than carbon capture and storage for achieving the long-term net-zero emissions goal. In the LEAP modeling, GHG emissions rise until they peak in 2029, then gradually decline until reaching zero by 2050. Meanwhile, the emission abatement cost is 16 USD/ton CO2e in the renewable policy scenario and 12 USD/CO2e in the net-zero emissions scenario.

The association between economic growth (EG) and environmental degradation (ED) has been highlighted extensively in prior studies. However, investigation regarding ‘technological innovation and clean energy role’ in dealing with environmental concerns has comprised limited context while considering the ASEAN economies under sustainable development goals. Therefore, the study attempts to investigate the phenomenon by using CS-ARDL analysis under short as well as long run. The findings through CS-ARDL in long- and short-run indicate that REN have impact carbon emission and ecological footprints negatively. Additionally, the EG in targeted economies is causing a higher level of CE and ecological footprints. Whereas, GDP2ofund to be significant in lowering the ED in the form of CE and ecological footprints. It is suggested that policies related to CE through EG should be developed in order to control the environmental issues in the future.
