The paper addresses the economic competitiveness of nuclear energy, including traditional large reactors and small modular reactors, compared to wind and solar power in decarbonization scenarios for five ASEAN Member States (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam), revealing that nuclear energy becomes economically competitive for net-zero targets if the overnight cost is akin to recent Chinese and Korean nuclear plants, while a mix of wind and solar becomes more cost-effective if comparable to UK, US, or French nuclear plant costs, providing insights for policy discussions and recommendations in the ASEAN region.
