Five ACCEPT II’s Paper in Tackling Energy-Climate Issues Been Presented on the 3rd AICEE Conference in Bali, Indonesia

Bali, 24 August 2023

  • The 5 ACCEPT II papers have got accepted among more than 150 submissions to be presented at the 3rd ASEAN International Conference on Energy and Environment (AICEE) Conference held in Bali, Indonesia on 24 August 2023.
  • Muhammad Shidiq, Senior Research Analyst of ACCEPT II presented the paper on “Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) Implementation on Reducing Emissions in ASEAN Energy Sector”. Indira Pradnyaswari, Associate Research Analyst of ACCEPT II presented the paper on “How Effective is The Carbon Pricing Implementation in AMS to Reduce Regional Emissions”.
  • The conference has gained more than 150 registered participants from the 10 ASEAN Member States and other 10 countries outside the southeast asia region.

The AICEE is an annual flagship conference organized by the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) since 2020. In conjunction with The ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF) 2023 and the 41st ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM), the event took place in Bali, Indonesia. In this opportunity, ACCEPT II, as the Academic Partner submitted 5 papers and presented it at the conference. With the theme of “Accelerating a Just, Secure, and Resilient Energy Transition in ASEAN through Innovation and Interconnectivity”, ACCEPT II proudly presented 5 papers with the title:

  1. Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) Implementation on Reducing Emissions in ASEAN Energy Sector
  2. How Effective the Carbon Pricing Implementation in AMS to Reduce Regional Emissions
  3. Review and Analysis of Readiness, Challenges, and Potential Benefits of Power Grid Interconnection on Energy Security and Transition Pathways in ASEAN
  4. Economic Feasibility of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) in ASEAN
  5. Utilizing Unconventional Geothermal for ASEAN Member States: An Economic and Climate Analysis

The conference was held in Bali Nusa Dua Convention Centre (BNDCC) on 24 August 2023. Each presenter was given a ten-minutes presentation to share their findings on a current research topic. The session will continue with five-minutes discussions between the presenter, chair, and audiences. ACCEPT II team representatives, namely Prof. Indra Øverland, Muhammad Shidiq, and Indira Pradnyaswari attended the conference at presented their paper findings. At the conference, Muhammad Shidiq, Senior Research Analyst of ACCEPT II had presented the “Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) Implementation on Reducing Emissions in ASEAN Energy Sector”. The paperwork discusses the challenges and opportunities that might appear on CBAM implementation in ASEAN countries. To be precise, it mentioned the potential implications of CBAM for industrial sector, including imported products, trades, and emissions reduction in the ASEAN region. The data was collected through literature review and in-depth experts survey conducted by ACCEPT II team. In summary, the findings discover a policy design to accelerate CBAM’s policy design such as (a) strengthening data collection and transparency; (b) understanding impact and measurement; (c) setting up an emission reduction and carbon pricing mechanisms; (d) facilitating transition and trade dynamics; (e) boosting renewable energy and enhancing resilience; and (f) integrating energy and climate policy. Overall, the study provides valuable insights into CBAM’s potential impact on ASEAN’s energy-intensive industries.

On the other hand, Indira Pradnyaswari, Associate Research Analyst of ACCEPT II presented “How Effective is The Carbon Pricing Implementation in AMS to Reduce Regional Emissions”. The study is conducted based on the urgency of 7th ASEAN Energy Outlook (AEO7) projection on an increase of 3.7 times GHG emissions by 2050 and AMS’ commitment to Paris Agreement in which to reduce emissions and achieve net-zero target. Currently, ASEAN countries are exploring the scheme of carbon pricing as an intensified effort to reach the net zero target as well as increasing the economic growth. To measure the effectiveness of the carbon pricing implementation, ACCEPT II team refers to five research parameters which are (1) the level of carbon pricing; (2) the design of carbon pricing system; (3) timeline for carbon pricing implementation; (4) impact of carbon pricing in different countries; and (5) political feasibility of carbon pricing. The data collection also gained from conducting literature reviews and experts survey. In general, the research findings show that carbon pricing might be potential as a comprehensive mitigation action to reduce emission especially from power generation and manufacturing industries. Comprehensively, the study offers insights into effective carbon pricing strategies, guiding informed decision-making for emissions reduction within ASEAN and beyond ACCEPT II involvement in the 3rd AICEE is a starting point to improve the cross-sectoral information sharing between the ASEAN region to support the implementation of net zero target progressively.
