ARNECC Paper Talks – Net Zero #7

Description

Malaysia is the second largest producer and exporter of palm oil. Despite several studies on reducing emissions in the palm oil sector, there are gaps in analyzing pathways for achieving net-zero emissions. This study analyzed decarbonisation pathways for the upstream and midstream segments of the palm oil sector in Malaysia, focusing on oil palm plantations and palm oil mills. The study identified sources of greenhouse gas emissions and estimated emissions based on current best practices. It also evaluated strategies for attaining net-zero status using existing and emerging technologies. The results show that converting empty fruit bunches to briquettes and pellets can achieve net-zero emissions, as well as EFB-biochar and EFB-syngas pathways. The study assessed technology readiness levels, identified challenges, and proposed recommendations for implementation.
