Engaging Youth in Energy and Climate Action with Sampoerna University and the Institute of Science Tokyo

Jakarta, 26 August 2025 – The ASEAN Centre for Energy, supported by the ASEAN Climate Change and Energy Project (ACCEPT) hosted a visit from Sampoerna University and the Institute of Science Tokyo through the Building Entrepreneurial Mindset for Sustainable Technology and Society (BESTS) programme. As a project dedicated to raising awareness and understanding the energy-climate nexus, ACCEPT considers youth as an important part of the conversation. The office visit was aimed at engaging youth to understand the intersection of energy and climate issues and how they can contribute to climate action through entrepreneurial projects. 

The event was led by Ms. Livia Liannasari, Research Assistant for ACCEPT, as the Master of Ceremony, followed by opening remarks from Mr. Muhammad Rizki Kresnawan, Senior Energy Modeller of the Energy Modelling and Policy Planning Department, representing ACCEPT. It was followed by welcoming remarks from Dr. Zulfikar Yurnaidi, Head of the Energy Modelling and Policy Planning Department, representing ACE. Prof. Eri Ota of the Institute Science Tokyo also extended her remarks, shining light on climate change awareness and the opportunity for youth engagement.

Mr. Beni Suryadi, Senior Manager of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) Department, gave an interactive lecture titled SDG 7 & 13: Clean Energy and Climate Action in ASEAN.The session included a comprehensive introduction on ACE, a discussion on the importance of energy, collective climate actions in ASEAN, the link between energy and climate, and how the youth can play a part in the road towards a more sustainable and climate-resilient future. The delegates also took part in the discussions through interactive live polls to gauge their understanding of the topic.

During the live polls, the delegates actively participated in answering questions about their knowledge around net zero and renewable energy, showing diverse perspectives and knowledge on ASEAN’s current and future energy landscape. The delegates were also encouraged to share their ideas and perspectives in a blog article, which would be disseminated through ACCEPT’s website. In the discussion session, Ir. Farid Triawan, D. Eng., Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology from Sampoerna University, emphasised the importance of equipping youth with knowledge on renewable energy and energy efficiency. He underlined that energy efficiency plays a key role in advancing climate action through entrepreneurship and could serve as a central focus in developing business prototypes.

Following the lecture, the participants joined a guided tour session of the ACE Headquarters, exploring the office, the Wall of Knowledge, and the rooftop solar panel installation. The tour, led by Mr. Muhammad Rizki Kresnawan, Mr. Muhammad Ilham Rizaldi, and Ms. Indira Pradnyaswari, offered an interactive and immersive experience.  

From this event, ACE and ACCEPT reaffirmed their commitment to an inclusive and sustainable energy transition by bringing youth into the conversation and cultivating the next generation of talent.
