Education holds a crucial role in ensuring that younger generations are equipped with the knowledge and understanding of clean energy. The ASEAN Climate Change and Energy Project (ACCEPT) recognises this importance and considers education as an important aspect in driving the inclusivity within a clean energy transition in ASEAN.

Hence, as part of its key outcomes, ACCEPT actively conducts knowledge sharing on ASEAN’s energy and climate nexus. On 6 February 2025, Indira Pradnyaswari, Associate Research Analyst of ACCEPT II, represented the project and provided a session on “Clean and Affordable Energy” to students at Tanah Tingal Elementary School in Tangerang, Indonesia. This informative session aimed to provide a foundation for the students in understanding the importance of clean energy and how it benefits the environment.

Indira began the session by introducing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) no. 7, “Affordable and Clean Energy”, which is the overarching theme of the event, and proceeded to explain the importance of incorporating renewable energy (RE) into daily lives. Unlike energy from fossil fuel, which produces large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions and are limited in amount, RE is the cleaner and more affordable alternative. Indira gave a brief overview of each RE source, namely hydro, wind, and solar, as well as their technological applications in daily lives.

She further highlighted RE’s role in mitigating the effects of climate change. She explained that calumnious pollutants—including greenhouse gas emissions—in the is contributed to the process of global warming, resulting in the increase of earth’s atmospheric temperature. She emphasised that it is also important to use electricity efficiently and save energy for everyone and not limited to their age. Recognising that the students of Tanah Tingal Elementary School must use electricity in daily basis, she provided simple energy efficiency examples that the students can adopt starting at an early age, such as turning off air conditioners (AC) and lights when not in use.

The session continued with an interactive segment featuring a quiz, where students answered questions on the presentation contents and shared their insights, reflections, and experiences on saving energy at home. This was followed by a poster-making activity. The students were divided into groups, allowing them to visually express their understanding of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Moving forward, ACCEPT remains committed to sharing knowledge on ASEAN’s energy and climate nexus through various educational and outreach activities. Engaging with students at Tanah Tingal Elementary School, ACCEPT will continue to foster awareness and promote a deeper understanding on clean and renewable energy solutions as well as promoting a just and inclusive environment for ASEAN’s green energy transition.
