• ACCEPT II has been engaged with the 3rd ASEAN International Conference on Energy and Environment (3rd AICEE) as the Academic Partner to be involved as Chair during the paper presentation as well as the paper reviewer of paper during the selection process.  
• Prof Indra Øverland, Muhammad Shidiq and Indira Pradnyaswari have been involved as Chair during the 3rd AICEE Presentation Agenda on 24 August 2023 held in Bali, Indonesia.  
• Prof Indra Øverland of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) and Prof Stein Oluf Kristiansen of Agder University are involved as paper reviewers representing the ACCEPT II team.  

ACCEPT II has continuously shown its efforts on promoting knowledge sharing relevant to energy and climate nexus in ASEAN region.  As a knowledge hub and think tank platform, the project consistently provides intensive reports and activities to widen the impact and urgency of climate-energy sector among ASEAN member states. In parallel with the ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF) 2023 which held in Bali, Indonesia, ACCEPT II is an active collaborator of the 3rd ASEAN International Conference on Energy and Environment (3rd AICEE).  

Prof. Indra Øverland, Research Professor of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) who is also the partner of ACCEPT II showed his enthusiasm to get involved in the 3rd AICEE and had given an opportunity as the Keynote Speech on Carbon Pricing and Green Investment topic. He conveyed the benefits of carbon pricing will be gained in three levels, which are domestic within AMS, regional within ASEAN, and global outside ASEAN. The logic of carbon pricing, which is an interesting topic to discuss, is also included in the material. It underlines the existence of carbon pricing to reduce emissions at the lowest possible cost, generating new revenue stream through carbon tax, and adjustable financing scheme that is applicable for the country. This logic emerges as the ambitious targets that have been highlighted by the AMS regarding the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), net zero target, renewable energy targets, and the urge of investment pathways for clean energy in ASEAN. The carbon pricing scenario that has started to be developed also has the potential to improve the economic growth within the country.  

On the other hand, to accelerate the implementation of carbon pricing in ASEAN, the region is required to attract more capital, supporting more infrastructure development as well as the capacity building for the people. Indeed, a regional carbon pricing scenario is a challenging yet attainable scheme to be implemented in the ASEAN region. In addition, Prof. Indra Øverland also brought up the potential challenges that might be faced by the AMS. The emerging issues include the uncertainty of political situation and the interference of international climate policy. Moreover, Prof. Indra Øverland also boldly stated that measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) is a crucial consideration for the success of carbon pricing. In this case, a collaboration between ASEAN and other international or governmental institutions outside the region is also necessary to excel the realization of carbon pricing.  

Based on the presentation, the best way to begin carbon pricing implementation in ASEAN is to set up a fixed schedule, ensure the roadmap and set up the short-term and long-term goals of carbon pricing in every aspect. ASEAN should open more opportunities for international collaboration and cross-sectoral studies to nourish the region in achieving its et zero target through various approaches.

Aligned with advancing and strengthening the regional perspectives of climate-relevant technologies and implementation in ASEAN, ACCEPT II has submitted 5 papers related to the energy and climate sector and got accepted to present all the papers among more than 150 international submissions. In this opportunity, ACCEPT II was also involved as the chair of the session – to give assessment and evaluations regarding each presenter and topics they were delivered during the conference. Muhammad Shidiq, Senior Research Analyst of ACCEPT II has become a Chair for Carbon Pricing session, while Indira Pradnyaswari, Associate Research Analyst has chaired the session on the Energy Accessibility and Workforce. 

A collaborative cooperation between ACCEPT II and the 3rd AICEE has proven that the team persistently shows a real cooperation to have broader audience and participants to acknowledge and implement the urge of energy-climate issues.
